Kuwait’s National Day (اليوم الوطني) celebrates the nation's full independence achieved in 1961 following the end of the British protectorate status. Although independence was officially declared on June 19, 1961, the government officially moved the annual National Day holiday to February 25 to mark the anniversary of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah’s accession to power in 1950, as well as to avoid the severe heat of the midsummer months. The 1965 observance marked the Fourth Anniversary of National Day, honoring Kuwait’s growth as an independent, constitutional state enjoying rapid economic expansion and social development.
To commemorate this national milestone on February 25, 1965, Kuwait’s postal administration released a dedicated commemorative stamp series printed by Joh. Enschedé in the Netherlands. Issuing special postage for National Day served to promote patriotic unity and celebrate the country's transformation from its historical seafaring and trading roots into a modern industrial state, highlighting Kuwait's commitment to peace, sovereignty, and regional progress.
