The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was originally founded in Paris on May 17, 1865, as the International Telegraph Union to standardize international telegraph networks and cross-border communications protocols. As global technology evolved, its remit expanded to encompass telephony, radio broadcasting, and satellite communications, eventually becoming a specialized agency of the United Nations. The centenary in 1965 (العيد المئوي للاتحاد الدولي للمواصلات السلكية واللاسلكية) marked 100 years of international cooperation in regulating and advancing global telecommunication infrastructure.
To commemorate the Centenary of the International Telecommunication Union on May 17, 1965, Kuwait’s postal administration issued a dedicated commemorative set printed by Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. Featuring the ITU emblem alongside early telegraph poles (1865) and modern telecommunication antennas (1965), the stamp highlighted Kuwait's active role in global scientific organizations and celebrated a century of worldwide progress in telecommunication technology.
